What is a Hate Crime?
A hate crime is broadly defined as any act of criminal violence, intimidation, or destruction motivated by prejudice toward a person or a group based on their gender, social group, race, color, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, or national origin. With the exception of “ethnic intimidation,” Ohio does not consider hate crimes stand-alone offenses; rather, they are considered discretionary sentencing factors and can lead to enhanced penalties for underlying crimes.
