What is a Federal Crime?
A federal crime is a criminal act that has been made illegal by U.S. federal legislation and is therefore prosecuted under federal law rather than state law. There are many federal agencies with the authority to pursue investigations into federal offenses, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.), the Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.), and the Internal Revenue Service (I.R.S.). The federal government prosecutes a wide variety of crimes, including but not limited to:
- Bank burglary and fraud
- Drug possession and trafficking
- Illegal gambling businesses
- Interstate transportation of stolen property
- Kidnapping
- Piracy and intellectual property fraud
- Matters of homeland security and terrorism
- Sexual exploitation of children
- White collar crimes such as identity theft, corruption, embezzlement, and fraud
- Organized crime and gang activities
